Henderson's Bistro, Edinburgh

94 Hanover Street (just around the corner, on Thistle Street)

Henderson's Bistro has become my new favourite haunt for good vegetarian and vegan food in town.

It's been around for thirty years, and has a very different feel from the busy canteen-styled restaurant below. Little tables, fairy lights, roses, tealight candles and happy, relaxed service are the order of the day here.

It's a good, if unchanging, menu. All vegan options are clearly marked, and most veggie options can be made vegan too. I think I've had most of the food on the menu now, having been to the restaurant so much. I LOVE the bean-burger, the enchillada and the lasagne. The haggis also comes highly recommended, but I had the curry last time I was there and it was far too watery. All the starters and deserts are good: I'd particularly encourage you to try the vegan cherry pie - delicious.

All the wine is vegan friendly and there are a few biodynamic options available too.

Prices are competitive for City Centre eating - £20 should get you two tasty, filling courses and a drink.

Great food, great service, great atmosphere. What more could you want?
