Saturday 29th November is Buy Nothing Day, and I'll be participating this year.'The rules are simple, for 24 hours you will detox from consumerism and live without shopping. Anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending!'
I'll be honest - I'm not a spendaholic or anything anyway, so this isn't a huge deal for me. However, it's sometimes nice to take part in things like this, and I could do with spending nothing for a day!
There are a few events on round the UK - in Edinburgh Friends of the Earth are hosting a 'Swap your stuff' stall at Register's house.
Other things to do for free in town during the day:
- Go to a museum - the enchanting Museum of Childhood, windy Museum of Edinburgh, or impressive National Museum of Scotland, perhaps.
- Go to an art gallery - like the lovely National Gallery of Scotland
- Take a walk to the Botanic Gardens
- Watch lots of TV
- Take photos, paint a picture, write a story!
I always like the idea of Buy Nothing Day and with it being a Saturday i can even not buy a newspaper.
ReplyDeleteLike you though i don't really spend much anyway, though i do have a bad second hand book problem. Edinburgh just has too many good second hand bookshops these days!
Good idea Laura! I think I can manage it.
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic idea. I don't know if it's only a UK/Scottish event, but I have been passing on info about it (thanks to your blog!) to friends everywhere.
ReplyDeleteAnd I am proud to say my family and I participated and found LOADS of interesting things to do that don't require a penny!
Thank you for such a cheerful, informative and inspiring blog Veggie Lady!

Thanks guys! I had a nice, relaxing day - baked a vegan torte, finished a novel and had a long soak in the bath with a book. Hope you had similarly rich, money free days ;-)
